People Person: All We Need is Change

That’s me on the left, with Steph Gottron on the right.

Hey everyone! I hope all is well. :-)

I thought I would share something pretty interesting that happened in one of my classes. The class is called human diversity, and that’s exactly what we learn about. Dr. Parris Baker – one of Gannon’s spectacular social work educators – had us do a class exercise that was out of the ordinary, I must say.

The exercise? Come dressed as a homeless person.

PHOTOS: GU Students Serve the Community on GIVE Day

Each year, over one thousand students participate in Gannon’s Invitation to Volunteer Everywhere — also known as GIVE Day. This past Saturday, students went out into the community to help with various jobs and projects while gaining team-building skills and lasting friendships! We caught up with several groups on campus — Alpha Psi Omega, Gamma Sigma Sigma, Alpha Sigma Tau, the Honors Program, members of the Upperclassman team and residents of Wehrle Hall — to see where they spent their day GIVEing.

Eternal Sunshine: Lights, Camera… Ramen Noodle Salad(?)

No two people are the same. Fingerprints, hair color, style of speech, beliefs, likes and dislikes make every person unique. In quite the same way, no two years in college – particularly at Gannon – are the same. Each year brings new faces, classes, voices and experiences to our campus in the city, and I’m beyond grateful for them.

This year, my program is offering a class for the first time – video pre-production and performance. This course was tailored by two of our instructors, David Blaetz and M.C. Gensheimer, to allow students who already have base-level editing and performance classes under their belt to exercise skills in a practical setting.

Is Business or Engineering in your Future?

Engineering Day
If power electronics, bioinformatics, environmental science or computer networking sound like buzz words that fit your focus – or if they just sound like something out of a sweet sci-fi film – you’re invited to check out Gannon’s Engineering Day, coming up on Oct. 1, 2010.

You and your family will get a first-hand look at Gannon’s engineering and computer science programs. Kick off the morning with registration at 9:30 a.m., followed by a welcome from the Dean of the College of Engineering and Business.

Q&A: Campus Ministry with the Rev. George Strohmeyer

Fr. George Strohmeyer has been an active member of the GU community and a mentor to students for many years.

The Rev. George Strohmeyer, university chaplain and vice president of university mission and ministry, answers a few questions about faith on Gannon’s campus.

How do you encourage students to continue to grow in their faith through college?

Faith today can be tested mightily in our cultural setting that is seen by some to be more materialistic and self-absorbed. These are not new things. Every human being and every culture from all time is capable of being tested mightily in the basic mission and identity of being a living, breathing human being in a community of fellow human beings.

Student Fave: Escape the City Scene at Presque Isle

Just a few miles from Gannon, Presque Isle is a popular tourist destination for out-of-towners and an ideal hangout for students. Photo by Carly Lyons.

The words sand, sun and water bring to mind rolling beaches along ocean coasts, warm weather and enormous crowds of people fighting for that towel-sized spot to work on their tans and relax to the sounds of waves and seagulls. These sounds may seem to be somewhere hundreds of miles away, or maybe just on one of those calming-sounds CDs.

However, they can actually be found right in Gannon’s backyard.

Engineering Experience: Wait… I’m a Junior??

It’s a Thursday morning.  For me, that means a 9:30 a.m. class with Dr. Lee and automatic control at noon.

This is the fifth week of classes of my junior year.  Also, I’m exactly one week away from my twenty-first birthday.  It also means that I should get my blog done and turned in! :-)

The Erieite: Home is Where You Make It

They say home is where the heart is. Cheesy, right?

Two years ago, home was defined as the house that I had grown up in with my mom, sister and two cats. Home was the one square mile town where everybody knew my name.

As a freshman, I looked forward to breaks as a chance to go home and sleep in my own bed, enjoy the company of the cats that I thought I hated but now sorta missed and get to enjoy some of my mom’s homemade food that I had craved so much.

The Numbers Guy: Junior Year = The Best Kind of Busy

Hey everyone!

I know it’s been a while. I’ve been extremely busy with school, work and fraternity things. It’s nice not to have to wake up at 4 in the morning and go to work anymore. However, adjusting back to homework, studying, and campus life is a challenge. All the new faces, experiences and opportunities are going to make for a very interesting year.
