Pulse GU: Going Inside the Operating Room

I had an awesome experience inside an operating room this week. I’ll get to that in a second. I’ve got a lot to cover!

It has been a busy month for me.  We just got back from fall break last week.  It was a short break, but a much needed one!  I didn’t do a lot; I just visited with family and friends and did some homework.

I had a nursing clinical this past Tuesday. We had a health fair at the Mid City Towers on 9th street where we did screening for blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol. We gave flu shots and taught hand washing and proper coughing techniques to prevent the spreading of germs.  It was an awesome experience and I really enjoyed participating in the fair.

Now, on to the surgery…

Student Fave: Step Back in Time at Grasshopper

Photo from Grasshopper's Facebook group

Among the common brick and cement store-fronts on Peach Street, the business district is interrupted by a neon-green larger-than-life grasshopper mural. Wearing purple sunglasses and smiling from its perch aside a storefront wall, the insect marks the location of a favorite store among Erie college students – Grasshopper.

Grasshopper is a throwback to the ‘60s and ‘70s.  From the sweet aroma of incense and candles that permeates the store to the colorful tie-dyed tapestries hanging from the walls (and the Bohemian music playing in the background), it’s hard not to feel like you’ve stepped back in time while shopping.

Eternal Sunshine: Halloween Costumes (and Homecoming VIDEO)

I’m posting a sweet video from Homecoming. Click in for that. But first, my blog…

Even though I’m someone who really hates scary movies, and I get ticked at my roommate every time she tries to jump out of her bedroom to scare me, I love Halloween.

Halloween is awesome.

Student Voices: KnightCallers Answer Your Questions

As the school year continues into October and November, it’s time for high school seniors to begin narrowing down their college choices. A good way to do this is to speak with current students about their campus. We caught up with some of Gannon’s KnightCallers – current Gannon students who call high-schoolers to check in on their college search process and answer questions. If you’re considering coming to Gannon you may have even had a call from one of them. We wanted to know what questions they get asked most frequently — who knows, you might be wondering the same thing!

Holly Urbanick, senior English major
A lot of potential students ask questions related to our campus’ downtown setting. If they ask about security I usually describe how close each Gannon building is and also talk about the proximity of the Erie police in addition to Gannon’s security – such as GUEST or the blue response boxes. When a student asks about what to do in Erie, I talk about things like the Millcreek Mall, Erie Playhouse, Presque Isle, Warner Theater and Bayfront attractions.

How long have you been involved with APB?

Pamela: I have been involved with APB since my freshmen year and was part of the 2009 Homecoming committee.

Lauren: This is my third year in APB – I have been on the Homecoming Committee the past two years. This is both of our first years on the APB Executive Board.

The Erieite: Oh, I Just Can’t Wait to be King

The Earth is round. This we know to be true. On Columbus Day I was thinking about how before Christopher Columbus, no one really believed this concept. Columbus set sail in 1492 to prove the world that this was true. He took a risk to prove the world wrong, and he succeeded.

It was this thought that made me realize that sometimes you have to take risks and put yourself out there – and that’s exactly what I’m doing as a candidate for Homecoming king.

At Gannon, most organizations nominate a candidate to run for Homecoming. Some of my fraternity brothers in Zeta Beta Tau threw around the idea of me running for Homecoming king, and at first I was terrified. Yes, I have performed on the Schuster Theatre’s stage before and stage fright really isn’t an issue for me. But those shows are scripted, and I have rehearsed what I am supposed to do over and over again before actually having to perform. Now, some of the things that candidates have to do are not scripted at all.

Not having a script is terrifying.

Possibilities are Endless with GU’s Pre-Professional Med Programs

Landis Erwin, a first-time Edge contributor, is a junior journalism communications major from Greenville, Pa and a graduate of Greenville Senior High School.

Gannon provides great opportunities for students interested in the field of medicine. The Pre-Professional Medical program can lead you in any direction such as dentistry, optometry, podiatry, chiropractic, veterinary or overall medicine.

The demand for quality health care providers continues to grow due to the shortages in primary care physicians, optometrists and veterinarians. This field is not offered by many colleges and universities, but at Gannon the relationships held with advisors and professors are outstanding, giving students the ultimate assistance available to succeed in the program. The classes and field work help prepare students for health professional schools.
