Helping Those Who Protect: More Ways to Use Your Gannon Degree

Maj. Vincent B. Myers ’00, ’00C
Nursing

There is absolutely no better job than caring for America’s warriors (both current soldiers and retirees) and their families, and the leadership opportunities, cultural growth opportunities and the variety of clinical experience as an Army nurse are unmatched. So far, I have moved eight times in 11 years, all across the globe, and am currently stationed in Illesheim, Germany, where I am commander of the Illesheim Health Clinic. I have also served as: chief nurse executive at the Bamberg (Germany) Health Clinic; clinical head nurse at the 121st Combat Support Hospital in Seoul, South Korea; executive aide to the commanding general, Medical Research and Materiel Command, Ft. Detrick; and executive aide to the commanding general, Walter Reed Army Medical Center. I was deployed to Afghanistan in 2002 as a nurse for an area support medical company.

College: There’s an App for That

I love tech. There is no doubt about that. For me it is probably borderline obsession, but I have no problem with that.

I have recently been thinking about how each new class of students who go to college bring new technology with them. The newest item of tech is the tablet. These range from an iPad, Blackberry Playbook, HP Touchpad, maybe even the new Kindle Fire. The question is however, is having a tablet for college something that is worth having?

Historic Haunt Provides An Eerie Attraction

Nothing signals the onset of fall more than the radio playing ads for haunted houses claiming that they will scare your pants off and make you cry like a newborn baby. For most people the pants stay on, but they do leave the park constantly looking over their shoulder and shaking from fear.

The Erie area has a lot to offer in the field of haunted attractions from just a simple haunted house to lengthy corn mazes and multi-level fear parks. One of these is located at Conneaut Lake Park, which is just a short drive away from campus. Get in the car and take the half-hour drive to mentally prepare yourself for the most horrific night of your life.

Elaine A. Martyn ’98
Communication English

I have always been driven— even during my time at Gannon, I double majored in English literature and communications and medical studies (with a dual minor in biology and chemistry) and served as editor of Totem, the University’s literary magazine, for three years. I earned a master’s degree in Victorian literature from the University of Leeds in England and have published on such topics as equal opportunities, mentorship, management and medical education. Today, I have over a decade of experience in fundraising, communications, policy writing, patient advocacy and health care philanthropy. As director of development for Refugees International, I have raised over $12 million—a driving force in providing lifesaving assistance for the world’s 55 million displaced and stateless people.
