The Gannon women’s basketball team has assumed the top spot in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings released Wednesday afternoon.

Gannon moved up from last week’s No. 2 spot and into first place with a 25-2 record against NCAA Division II teams and 23-2 mark within the region. Glenville State (23-3, 23-3), Edinboro (20-5, 20-5), Bloomsburg (22-3, 22-3) and Virginia State (21-1, 20-1) completed the top five.

Fairmont State (15-8, 15-8), California (Pa.) (17-7, 17-6), Shaw (17-8, 16-8), Fayetteville State (17-6, 17-6) and West Liberty (16-9, 16-9) rounded out the top 10.

The NCAA regional rankings determine the postseason participants for the NCAA Division II Tournament. Eight teams will play in the Atlantic Regional. Automatic berths are granted to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) champions.

The remaining spots will be filled with six at-large bids. The top-ranked team after the conference tournaments will host the eight-team regional. The NCAA Division II Selection Show is scheduled for Sunday, March 9 at 10 p.m.

Head coach Jim Brunelli‘s club concluded the regular season with a 25-2 overall record and 14-2 PSAC Western Division mark with a sweep of Clarion (73-33) and Pitt-Johnstown (71-50) last week.

Gannon is idle this week. The Lady Knights have a bye Wednesday during the final night of the PSAC regular-season schedule, before also having a bye in the PSAC Tournament first round. The squad returns to action Tuesday, March 4 against an opponent to be determined in the PSAC Quarterfinals at the Hammermill Center. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Playoff seats for season ticket holders can be renewed and general admission seats can be purchased for the PSAC quarterfinal games beginning Thursday, February 27. Complete information on season ticket renewals and general ticket pre-sale information can be found here.
