The most distinguishing feature of Erie may be the sparkling waters of the lake that is the city’s namesake. And where the two Eries meet is one of the city’s most distinguishing attractions: the Lake Erie bayfront.

Just a few blocks from Gannon’s campus, the bayfront offers lots of activities for all year round.

Looking to see the sights? Just take a stroll down to the bayfront and admire the water. If you want to try a different perspective, travel up the Bicentennial Tower, built in 1995 in celebration of the city’s 200th birthday. The observation deck, 138 feet in the air, offers a beautiful view of both the lake and the city.  If the weather is less than appealing, the Skywalk between the Sheraton Hotel and the Bayfront Convention Center offers an enclosed view.

Want to try your sea-legs? You can head to the Bayfront Maritime Center to learn more about different naval activities or to get some sailing lessons. Or take a water-taxi over to Presque Isle. This state park is over 3,000 acres, with 13 beaches on which to swim and relax. Those who would rather stay out of the water can also check out the Flagship Niagara, a reconstruction of the ship which was used by Commodore Perry in the war of 1812.

The bayfront also has many other miscellaneous attractions including the Erie County Public Library, several restaurants such as Smuggler’s Wharf, and during the summer, free concerts at the Liberty Park Amphitheater during Eight Great Tuesdays.

Whatever you’re looking to do, the bayfront has it, and it’s just a dock, I mean walk, away!
