Merida – Day 2

Merida – Day 2

Day 2:  Hello from Mexico!

Today marked our first full day in Merida. We started the day with some breakfast and headed into the city center for Sunday Mass and exploring. We walked around a large square with lots of small shops and regional plants and went to an open air museum that displayed art featuring the history of the Mayan people on the Yucatán Peninsula. We then went to Mass at 11:15 at Catedral de San Ildefonso. The church was constructed with stones originally from three Mayan temples in the city center that were deconstructed. The mass was absolutely beautiful.

We then met up volunteers at the mission, one who is a Gannon Alum, and explored the city center and went to lunch at El Restaurant La Chaya Maya where we got tacos! We finished with souvenir shopping, then went back to Casa Blanca and made pizza. We finished the day with a walk in the neighborhood and some ice cream! It was a beautiful day to explore Merida and experience a slice of their community.

With love,
