Guatemala 2026 – Day 5

4:30 a.m. comes earlier than you think in Guatemala! We began our day meeting up with the St. Mark’s seminarians bright and early, all with hopeful dispositions. We quickly realized that hiking a “hill” in Guatemala is very different from climbing a mountain in Pennsylvania. It was rough, but thankfully our guide didn’t even miss a breath when he had to circle back and find us!

At last, we reached the top just in time to watch the sun rise over the active volcano, Atitlán. The sight was more incredible than we could have imagined. The descent was fruitful — no pun intended — as Joe climbed an avocado tree and shook down a few treats for breakfast.

By the time we returned, we were famished. Breakfast was waiting for us: oatmeal, beans, eggs, and juice — just what the doctor ordered. Afterward, we were both humbled and inspired by the charity work we participated in within a small village about 30 minutes outside of San Lucas Tolimán.

We were surprised with a pit stop at a waterfall and rope bridge! It was scary for some and exciting for others, but enjoyable nonetheless. The terrain was treacherous, and many of us weren’t feeling well afterward. After a quick wipe-down, we headed to lunch, where we devoured fresh pico de gallo, guacamole, and delicious meat. The homemade chips were so fresh they put Moe’s Southwest Grill and Chipotle Mexican Grill to shame!

Next on the agenda, we returned to the women’s center to learn about indigenous life. We made homemade tortillas over an open fire, hand-washed our own clothes, and — perhaps the most eye-opening part — learned how Mayan women carry heavy buckets of clothing on their heads to transport their laundry. It was impactful to experience a lifestyle so different from what we are accustomed to.

Upon returning to the mission, most of the group finally found Maria, the local vendor we’ve all grown to love! Kaitlyn and Madeline took in the breathtaking view of Lake Atitlán before heading to dinner.

Overall, the day was emotionally charged — full of blessings, growth, and deepening friendships. We look forward to continuing our work with the mission in the days to come. San Lucas has been so generous and loving to our group, and we will never forget the impact you’ve had on us.

With love,

Kaitlyn and Ashley
