Today’s word of the day is Sustainability

Every morning we post a word of the day to discuss in our evening reflections.

We started our morning with freshly baked cinnamon rolls and breakfast sandwiches from On The Rise Bakery located inside the Solanus Casey Center. This bakery is owned by the Capuchin Soup Kitchen and provides employment opportunities for individuals that were previously incarcerated as well as provides access to housing, counseling services, and education. Starting tomorrow, our group will be volunteering at Earthwork’s Urban Farm which provides fresh produce for the Capuchin Soup Kitchen.

The Henry Ford Museum

After breakfast we headed to The Henry Ford – Museum of American Innovation. Here we explored numerous exhibits on early aviation, automobiles, locomotives, and more. Our group ate lunch at Plum Market Kitchen in the museum before returning to the Airbnb to rest before leaving for our evening service event at Keep Growing Detroit, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting Detroit’s food sovereignty and producing healthy, sustainable produce.

Keep Growing Detroit

At the service event, we worked on transplanting ground cherry seedlings with another group of volunteers completing a total of 53 flats! On the other end of the tables inside the greenhouse was a group of volunteers that packaged seeds for cucumber and spinach plants. During the closing circle with the Keep Growing Detroit volunteers, we learned that two of the participants had not planned to volunteer today, but decided to stop-in as they drove by to see if there was anything they could help out with–these volunteers are inspiring and remind us that there are no limits to service.

We can’t wait to see what we learn tomorrow at Earthworks!
