After nearly two weeks off, the Gannon men’s golf team returned to action at the Mercyhurst Invitational on Sunday at the Lake View Country Club. The Golden Knights collectively shot a 322 in the opening round to occupy 10th place among the field of 11 teams. Missing the top-20 cut by one stroke, freshman Daegan Wall (Regina, Saskatchewan / Dr. Martin Leboldus) is currently tied for 21st while leading all Golden Knight golfers with a 77.
The University of Toronto is currently on top of the leader board with an opening round score of 287. Carnegie Mellon is in second (298) followed by Daemen in third (303) and Roberts Wesleyan in fourth (307). Fifth place is currently held by three teams with a score of 309 including West Chester, Clarion and host Mercyhurst.
Juniors Jesper Jensen (Askim, Sweden / Hvitfeldtska Gymnasium) and Jon Marcson (Gothenburg, Sweden / Katrinelundsgymnasiet) are each tied for 43rd with a score of 81. Sophomore Cameron Zbrzeznj (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) is tied for 52nd (83) followed by freshman Billy Clark(Arnold, Pa. / Valley), who is tied for 58th (85).
Among the Golden Knights competing individually, juniors Lucas Ciulla (Phoenix, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) and Shyamal Nagindas (Aurora, Ontario / Dr. G.W. Williams) are each tied for 43rd with a score of 81. Junior Sean Mahon (East Amherst, N.Y. / Williamsville East) is tied for 52nd (83) followed by sophomore Stephen Kupniewski (Erie, Pa. / Collegiate Academy) and junior Dan Haller (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep), who are both tied for 65th (87).
The top-two spots in the Mercyhurst Invitational are held by Toronto golfers including Ryan Tsang in first (68) and Gordie Gibson in second (71). Tsang is four under par, while Gibson is one under par.
Gannon will return to the course at Lake View Country Club for day two of the Mercyhurst Invitational today.
