Gannon’s Jose Matos (Egg Harbor City, N.J./St. Augustine College Preparatory School) is ranked seventh at 133 pounds in the latest NCAA Division II national wrestling rankings released Thursday morning.

Matos has been tabbed second in the last two NCAA Division II Super Region One rankings, but cracked the national rankings for the first time this season. The redshirt senior improved to 5-1 overall with a 5-3 victory against the region’s top-ranked wrestler Dave Fogle of Pitt-Johnstown Tuesday night.

The Egg Harbor City, N.J., native did not wrestle during the first semester, before making a successful debut January 5 at the Lake Erie Open. Matos placed second there with a 3-1 record. He followed with a victory by pin at Millersville last Saturday. Three of his five wins have come via a pin.

Matos earned all-america honors with an eighth-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II National Championships. Matos qualified for the national championships with a third-place finish at the NCAA Division II Super Regional One. He posted a 24-8 overall record and a 9-1 dual mark during his last season in 2010-11.
