We are at that point in time where we are starting to look back on experiences we have had that we are thankful for. It is that time when we have so much to do, but we try remain optimistic as the semester comes down to its last month. Whether you are a freshman in undergrad, a senior getting ready to celebrate all those long nights, finishing up on your first semester of graduate studies, or even a prospective student, just know that change is right around the corner, if you so desire it.

If you had a great semester, keep up the great work! Know what works best for you and stick to it.

If you had a difficult semester, know that things will be alright. Change your study routine, ask for help from a teacher or friend. Get organized (something I am personally working on). If you are feeling pressure to choose a career path that someone else wants you to do and you are struggling, stop and think about what you want. Think about what you are good at and what makes you happy. It never ends up well when you do something that you truly don’t care about. If you are completely lost in the process, volunteer at different places, ask around, or visit the career center. Find a teacher you have a connection with and talk to them. You are not alone in this process. Be open to advice from others and different perspectives.

With Thanksgiving break coming up quickly (and ending quickly too!), use your free time to think of ideas and solutions, rather than worrying about what will happen. I have learned from experience that worrying about what can go wrong gets you nowhere (sometimes it even sets you behind). Just know that a fresh start is on its way. It takes time and dedication. You owe that much to yourself.

You may be wondering why I even care about this, but the truth is, I didn’t have anyone there to guide me. I felt alone and tried so hard to make everyone but myself happy. Once I changed that mindset, I opened doors to many more opportunities than I could have ever imagined. My advice to you, if you’re willing to accept:

1.Take risks,
2. Go outside of your comfort zone,
3. Actually talk to your teachers (they make the best friends down the road and are humans too!),
4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and,
5. Most importantly do what makes you happy!

One last thing- HAVE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Please take the time to celebrate with friends and family.

Talk soon,
Sue Ram
