Being happy is the best feeling anyone could have. It gets rid of the negativity in your life and makes you look at things in a much more positive way rather than constantly dragging yourself down. Many people – including myself – have struggled with being happy and just getting to their peak happiness. I know being away from home and the stress of school can make it harder to be happy. But I have been taught, told, and shown some ways to be happy, and they helped me. I will also share with you a few of these pieces of advice:

  • Working Out
    • It is scientifically proven that even 7 minutes of exercise can improve your mood. At some point in the day you could squeeze in a 7-minute workout. But you do not only exercise to improve your physical health, but also your mental health. Having the Rec on campus gives you a lot of access to being able to work out, but you could also do it from your room. I know starting to workout is hard because it is hard work, but once you do it for 2-3 days you will want to stick with it because you will already be feeling a little bit happier and better about yourself.

  • Spend time with family and friends
    • Being with family and friends can make you feel very happy and wanted. They are able to take your mind off of something that could be upsetting, so if you are having a bad day, being with people who are able to help you forget about what it is that is hurting your happy and bring it back to you. These are the people who always have your back and want to be there for you and make sure everything is okay, so take advantage of that.

  • Try to get at least eight hours of sleep a night
    • When fully rested, you can function better, and you just feel better overall. You will be less sensitive to many different things if you are fully rested, and you will want to do more, which can be much better for you rather than just sitting on the couch or constantly taking naps.

  • Meditation
    • Meditation is one of the many ways that you can control yourself and the way you feel just by doing one simple thing: breathing. Not only does it keep you calm and focused, but it also can make you happier. After meditating you might feel like you have a clear mind and feel more positive about all the things in life.

  • Go outside
    • The key to happiness is just a walk out the door, literally. Spending even 20 minutes outside can make you feel like a new person. Being locked up in a house or bedroom can make you feel like you are away from the work and stuffy, when you feel the breeze and warmth from the sun hit your skin, it is just such a nice feeling. Just sitting outside makes you feel so much more refreshed. You do not have to do an activity if you do not want to.
