• What do you like? The first step in trying to choose a major is figuring out what you enjoy doing. There are a few different ways to figure this step out.
    • Make a list of all the things that spark your interest. Figuring out what you enjoy most if one of the best ways to choose a major because you’re going to want to love your job. If you enjoy medicine, biology and problem solving, being a doctor or surgeon may be a good choice for you. If you enjoy being in front of a camera, social media and writing, then possibly being a journalist or a news anchor would be a good decision for you.
    • Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses. Personally, I wanted to be a dentist, but I knew that math and science were not my strong suits, so I decided against the idea because I knew that I had a lower chance of succeeding throughout college. Identifying your strengths and weaknesses will help you narrow down the possibilities.
    • Take career quizzes online. They may not be the most accurate, but you can see your results and think about if you would be interested in that career or not.
  • Talk to your advisors or guidance counselors. Having access to someone who is specialized in helping kids figure out what they want to do is a great way to figure out what you could choose for a major.
    • Ask them questions. There are many things you could ask them, but you should consider questions regarding college events, like what you must do for each major. For example, which classes should you take, etc.
    • Ask for their opinion. It’s always nice to get someone else’s opinion because they can maybe help you figure something out or change your mind.
  • Career goals?
    • While thinking about your career goals, a few different questions may come to mind. What are your career goals? Do you want to be someone who gets their doctoral degree, or someone who secures a bachelor degree? What will my future career require?
    • Once you figure out your career goal(s). You will be able to start out a plan for everything that will be needed to get to where you want to be. You will be able to find a school that has exactly what you want, and you can figure out prices for everything.
  • IT IS OKAY TO COME IN UNDECIDED.
    • Many people have this theory that you must come into college with a major and be all planned out, but it is totally okay to not know what you want to do. You can come to college and take some classes that will introduce you to different majors.
  • Changing a major.
    • It is okay to change your major if you realize you do not like it, or it is too hard, etc. I changed my major after the first semester of my freshman year. If you are worried about being too far behind, my advisor told me that up until sophomore year you should not have to worry about being behind because you still have a lot of time to catch up.
