Summer is fast approaching which means it’s almost music festival season! Coachella and SXSW officially kicked off music festival season earlier in the spring, but we’re just now entering the thick of it with the upcoming dates for Bonnaroo, Firefly and Lollapalooza. I decided to compile a music festival preview playlist so you know what the hottest bands are playing this summer. If you’re anything like me, you can’t really afford a three-day pass to Bonnaroo, so let this playlist act as a makeshift music festival. Now all you need are heart-shaped sunglasses and high-waisted shorts.

1. “Sober”- Childish Gambino

Childish Gambino is one of my favorite rappers and he’s one of the performers at Bonnaroo this year. Earlier last October, Gambino released an EP entitled Kauai featuring this particular track, “Sober.” This track shines a spotlight on Gambino’s flawless made-for-R&B voice. This smooth song is perfectly chill, so you can imagine yourself taking a midday nap on the camp site of Bonnaroo.

2. “Tear in My Heart”- twenty one pilots

You knew this was coming. Good ol’ twenty one pilots will be performing Sunday, June 14 at Bonnaroo. To date, this is their newest single. “Tear in my Heart” is all about how falling in love with the right person can help you defeat your inner demons. If you have time, definitely listen to this song while watching the music video. The video features lead singer’s wife Jenna Joseph. AWWWWWW.

3. “Suedehead”- Morrissey

One of Edge Editor Aaron Mook’s favorite artists, Morrissey, famous lead singer of the Smiths, will be performing at Firefly music festival. This song is pretty much as happy as Morrissey gets. The driving guitar and beat is the epitome of summer driving music, perfect for when you’re en route to the festival.

4. “When You Were Young”-The Killers

The Killers are one of the headliners for Firefly this year. This band is just one big trip of nostalgia for me. “When You Were Young” is the first track I heard from the band back in middle school. It has stuck with me ever since.

5. “Tightrope”- Walk the Moon

As an Ohio native, I am so incredibly proud of how far Cincinnati-based band Walk the Moon (WTM) has come within the past year. Now they’re performing at Firefly! Everyone has heard their hit “Shut Up and Dance,” but I wanted to introduce the public to a lesser-known WTM song. I saw “Tightrope” performed live back in 2012 when the band was still an “Ohio thing.” It’s just as energetic as the band’s newer material and brings me back to one of my first concert experiences.

6. “Lampshades on Fire”- Modest Mouse

Another Aaron Mook approved favorite, and another band scheduled to play at Firefly. Modest Mouse hasn’t released new music in eight years, but once you listen to “Lampshades on Fire,” it sounds like that hiatus hadn’t even existed. This new track is extremely catchy and fairly true to the band’s overall sound. This will definitely be fun to dance to in a crowd during a live performance.

7. “MANIAC”- Kid Cudi ft. Cage & St. Vincent

Another amazing Ohio artist, Kid Cudi will be performing at Lollapalooza in Chicago. Here’s one of his songs featuring another festival favorite St. Vincent.

8. “Mene”- Brand New

FINALLY! Fresh music from Brand New! Their newest song is absolutely perfect. It’s edgy, raw and full of typical angsty “Brand New-esque” lyrics. Catch them performing at Lollapalooza this summer.

9. “Twin Sized Mattress”- The Front Bottoms

The Front Bottoms is one of the newer bands I’ve discovered this year. Their album Talon of the Hawk is filled with poignant lyrics and catchy guitar riffs. The Front Bottoms will be performing at Bunbury Music Festival in Cincinnati, Ohio this weekend, June 5-7.

10. “Coffins”- MisterWives

After seeing MisterWives open for twenty one pilots previously this year, I instantly loved them. I adore lead singer Mandy Lee’s voice. This indie pop song is a chill hit, good for the drive home after a busy weekend at Lollapalooza.
