The Gannon University women’s basketball team, currently ranked in the top 10 nationally in NCAA Division II, has dominated its opponents on the court.
Fittingly, the Lady Knights have chosen “Together We Can Dominate” as the theme for their sixth annual Pink Zone game, to be played Saturday, Feb. 16 at Hammermill Center. The Lady Knights will host Clarion at 1 p.m., followed by the Gannon-Clarion men’s contest at 3 p.m.
Admission to both games is free. The Lady Knights will wear pink uniforms for the game.
The Gannon women’s team, coached by Cleve Wright, has set a goal of raising $20,000 for the Erie chapter of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and for Linked by Pink. In the past five years, the Gannon women’s basketball team has raised nearly $68,000 in support of breast cancer research.
Funds will be raised in part through the sale of Dri-FIT t-shirts. The shirts are black and are adorned with “Together We Can Dominate… Gannon Basketball Pink Zone 2013.”
They can be purchased for $15 at the Feb. 16 Pink Zone game and at the Lady Knights’ other home games leading up to the event: 5:30 p.m., Jan. 23 against Mercyhurst University; 1 p.m., Feb. 2 against Lock Haven; and 5:30 p.m., Feb. 13 against Edinboro. Shirts also can be purchased by contacting the Gannon women’s basketball offices, 814-871-5791.
The Lady Knights also will raise money through game-day raffles and other activities. During the Feb. 16 game, cancer survivors will be recognized.
The game’s “Hall of Fame” sponsors are the Gannon University Athletics Department, the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, WJET-24/FOX-66, and UPMC Hamot.
Additional sponsors include Giant Eagle, UPMC Health Plan, Silkscreen Unlimited, Johannes Chiropractic, ErieBank, Erie Sports Store, Panera Bread, FastSigns, Ambridge Rose Spa and Salon, and Romolo Chocolates.
General donations can be made by contacting the Gannon University women’s basketball offices at 814-871-5791.
