Gannon Goings-On: Your firsthand look at what students are doing in class and with campus organizations!

Tom Barton

Junior, Theatre and Communication Arts

As a sports lover, Barton has gotten lots of opportunities to learn about sports broadcasting by being involved with Gannon’s radio station, 90.5 WERG. “Every week, the Prime Time Sports Guys go on-air from 6-9 PM on Thursday evenings on 90.5 WERG. Our staff goes in-depth on national and local sports news and features distinguished guests during our shows. This week, we breakdown week nine of NFL action, analyze NHL regular season play and preview this weekend’s NCAA Women’s Soccer Playoffs.”

Mary Stephens

Senior, Occupational Therapy

“In my pediatric disabilities class, my teacher wanted us to participate in a gross motor activity. Obviously, the best way to do that is with a scavenger hunt. But in the [occupational therapy] world, we have to go the extra mile. Our teacher required one of us to be in a wheelchair at all times, and we had to take a picture with each thing on the list. So I had to push my roommate, Mary Kate, in a wheelchair all over campus and around State Street. Most of the items were fairly easy, like take a picture with the Knight and the Gannon arch. However, we also had to find the red or green trolley and children playing. It was an adventure and also my workout for the day. We didn’t win the scavenger hunt, but it was a  great time.”

Nick Humes

Sophomore, Advertising Communications

“One of the things I am involved with on campus is the school newspaper, The Gannon Knight. I’ve written something for it almost every week this semester. I love writing articles for my friends and peers to read. The Gannon Knight is an easy way to get involved on campus and it gives me a sense of self-fulfillment every time I pick up a paper and read something I wrote in it.”

Ellise Chase

Junior, Advertising Communications

Ellise also works for The Gannon Knight and loves it. “I am the business and advertising manager of Gannon’s 75-year-old newspaper.  I started at the Knight just as a staff writer, learning about newspaper writing while reporting on real events and being published.  The Knight is absolutely amazing in that everyone has the chance to be published.  It’s not like in the TV shows and movies where incoming freshman fetch coffee all day, The Knight provides an environment of encouragement and professionalism to help anyone gain basic knowledge and experience in the newspaper industry.”

Chase Miles

Junior, Theatre and Communications Arts

“The arts at Gannon never stop. There is always some play, concert, musical, etc. going on here. Right now we are in the middle of rehearsals for Twelfth Night, which is the 6th show I’ve done since last summer. It’s really an incredible feeling to be able to collaborate with so many different artists on so many projects.”
