Real talk: fall means the return of good, meaningful entertainment. Gone are the days of vapid summer blockbusters and mushy beach reads. The change of season goes hand in hand with the return of pop culture staples. Here are my top five choices of upcoming books, movies, music and television, guaranteed to keep you cozy during the blustery fall days.

  1. BADLANDS- Halsey, out August 28, 2015

This debut album from 20 year old Halsey has already reached #1 on the Billboard Alternative list. It is a concept album, telling the narrative of Halsey as she navigates her way through the Badlands, a metaphor for her life experiences. Halsey is a breath of fresh air in the indie pop industry. She’s unapologetic, genuine and an extraordinary performer. Halsey’s ethereal voice backed up by dreamy bass lines makes for an unforgettable listening adventure. Definitely give this album a spin on Spotify.

  1. Goodnight Mommy, premiered on September 11, 2015

This film has received notoriety over the summer for being “the scariest movie trailer ever made.” Twin brothers Elias and Luke are excited to finally be reunited with their mother after she undergoes facial surgery. However, after a series of strange behavior, the brothers suspect something evil lays underneath the bandages. This film has everything you could ever want in a horror movie: creepy twins, a mute, masked mother, and weird rituals taking place in the woods. Check it out on a dreary, rainy day.

  1. Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, out October 6, 2015.

This is the much anticipated spinoff novel to Rowell’s wildly successful Fangirl. While Fangirl follows the character of Cath and her transition to college, this novel focuses on Cath’s fictional crush, Simon Snow as he continues his education at Watford School of Magicks. This novel is said to be heavily inspired by Harry Potter and is advertised as “part ghost story, part love story, part mystery.”

  1. Return to the Moon– El Vy, out on October 31, 2015

This is the quintessential “nighttime fall” album. This debut LP features vocals from National’s Matt Berninger and Menomena’s Brent Knopf. Fans of the National will recognize Berninger’s dark, crackly voice, but in a new light backed up by instrumentals from Knopf. This album is sure to be the first of many released by this dynamic duo. Be sure to catch them on tour starting in November!

Listen to: “Careless,” the Smiths-like closer to the album.

  1. Ash vs. Evil Dead, premieres October 31, 2015

Fans of the original Evil Dead franchise rejoice! Beginning on Halloween night, Starz will be premiering a follow-up television series starring the series’ hero, Ash Williams. 30 years after the gruesome events in the cabin, Ash is living alone, trying to forget about the horrors he experienced. After the Evil Dead begin to attack again, it is up to Ash and co. to save the world from zombies. This show combines horror, comedy and gore for a truly fun television program.
