Professor Stan Zagorski has been a part of the Gannon biology faculty for 46 years. He has dedicated much of his career to the education of young people about the environment. His substantial and generous gift established the Stanley J. and Mary H. Zagorski Endowed “Power” Scholarship, which benefits students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher who are pursuing a degree in biology with an interest in either ecology or education with the intent to teach biology.
Under the provision of the “Power” Scholarship Challenge, Zagorski’s gift will be matched by Gannon.
According to Zagorski, “My wife, Mary, a long time advocate of health science education, and I had talked about establishing the scholarship for years. I felt that it was time to give back and enable students to have opportunities so they can help educate future generations of science students.”
Zagorski has published widely on the environment and presented at symposiums and workshops on the topic. His work includes two half-hour specials on Lake Erie and Presque Isle for the for CBS television network. He was awarded emeritus status upon his retirement.
The Stanley J. and Mary H. Zagorski Endowed “Power” Scholarship is among the almost 200 scholarships at Gannon endowed by corporations, foundations, families and individuals. Last year, Gannon University awarded nearly $914,000 in scholarships to more than 400 deserving students from a diversity of locations, backgrounds and financial circumstances. More than 90 percent of undergraduate students received a form of Gannon grant or scholarship.
Endowed gifts to Gannon can also help fund faculty positions, professorships, chairmanships, faculty excellence and study abroad programs at the University.
