With only 10 weeks left before school starts, Edge is conducting a countdown. Every week, we’ll  suggest a place to spend a day in Erie to make the most of your summer free time, starting with suggestion #10 this week…

Most of the time when someone thinks about a zoo, they most likely think about zoos in larger cities, such as Pittsburgh or Cleveland. Many would be surprised that Erie has a zoo that is home to over 400 animals. These animals range from penguins to rhinoceroses. They also have an indoor exhibit and a train ride that travels the perimeter of the zoo.

The zoo is just a short drive away from Gannon’s campus and with affordable pricing, the zoo is a great way to spend spare time in Erie. The zoo also offers multiple picnic pavilions to plan that Saturday afternoon picnic.

Interested in volunteering? The zoo offers volunteer opportunities — perfect for anyone interested in a veterinary program in the future.

Incoming freshmen, check it out in the fall or stop by after your orientation session. Build it in to a visit if you’re still looking into schools. However it happens, be sure to check out this great Erie attraction.
