J-School CoolAnyone who knows me understands not to speak to me between the hours of 3 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Tuesdays.

Why? Because that’s the time I shut out the world to put on my ol’ journo hat – the fedora of concentration, if you will – and put in my time as features editor of The Gannon Knight before the paper goes to press Wednesday morning.

The Knight is Gannon’s student-produced, 16-page weekly newspaper. Students come up with story ideas, write the articles, take the photos, lay out the pages (using QuarkXPress 8, for all you techies out there) and do all the proofreading and editing.

Oh – and for those of you interested in pursuing a student editor position at The Knight, it does provide a good chunk of scholarship money :-).

It’s really quite an amazing process to go from blank pages to a full-blown newspaper in the course of a week. Of course, like any huge project, it takes a lot of concentration and effort – but we still find ways to have a good time and beat the stress.

Enjoy these photos of some of our Gannon Knight staffers being their zany selves in our newsroom.

Oh, and the duck decoy? That’s our “ornithological correspondent,” Alice, who found her way into our office by way of our former sports editor, who’s an avid duck hunter.

But before you judge me, remember – to a ragtag group of student editors, everything’s funnier at 2 a.m. after 10 cups of coffee.
